Article 5 Section 14 of Michigan Constitution Allows Governor to Commute Susan's Sentence

Below is Governor Granholms' standard response to more than 1,000 letters she has received requesting she commute Susan Lefevre's sentence.

Please inform the Governor Article 5 Section 14 of the Michigan Constitution allows her to commute Susan's sentence today!

Thank you for contacting the Governor’s office regarding the incarceration of Susan LeFevre/Marie Walsh.  Governor Granholm has asked me to share the following comments with people and parties interested in this particular case:

“Present law requires the State of Michigan to carry out any criminal sentence imposed by a court and does not provide me the power to end or commute a sentence without the review and recommendation of Michigan’s Parole Board.  The Parole Board receives an overwhelming number of applications each year, so the consideration of a request can take months.  If you have further questions or desire additional information about the commutation process, you can contact The Michigan Parole Board at 517-373-4888.”

Again, thank you for taking time to contact the Governor’s offices.

Sincerely,
